Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between rice paper and mulberry paper?
Both papers are unique and used specifically for gyotakus. Rice paper is more sturdy with no grain fibers. Mulberry paper is more delicate with visible grain fibers.

Yes! We would be more than happy to frame your unique gyotaku! Please contact us for quotes on framing. Also, free shipping is only on unframed pieces.
  • Is it normal for the paper to be wrinkled and wavy?
Yes! This is completely normal. This happens in the process of rubbing the fish, as the paper is very thin and in the gyotaku process will inherently exhibit natural waves within it. This is part of the beauty of having an original gyotaku, made with the same technique that has been used for hundreds of years!
